CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Scarlett stepped across the threshold of Mystic Brews and called, “Jules, you here?”

The other woman pushed aside the beaded curtain that covered the door to the back. “I’m always here, seems like.” She grinned. “Productive afternoon?”

Scarlett nodded. “Very much so. Thanks for watching Dusk Runner for me.”

Jules stretched. “Well, I had to fight off a legion of angry dragons that wanted to add it to their vehicle horde, but it wasn’t a big deal.”

Scarlett laughed. “You’re so giving. So caring.”

“I am. It’s all true.”

Runeclaw snorted, and Jules produced a small pouch of catnip from behind her back. “Don’t worry, I didn’t forget I owed you a treat, cat.” She tossed it to Scarlett. “You should probably hold onto this. I think he has a problem.”

Scarlett shoved it in a pocket as she shook her head. “So many problems. It would take days to list them all.”

Runeclaw countered, “And you’re the biggest one.”

After exchanging a few more words, she pulled away on Dusk Runner with Runeclaw in front of her. She navigated the streets for a few blocks before parking outside a small restaurant she’d noticed earlier in the day in response to a growl of hunger from her stomach. The quaint eatery was warm and inviting, and the smells of homecooked food permeated the air as Scarlett sat at a corner booth. Runeclaw curled up on the seat next to her.

A short while later, she sipped a cup of strong coffee after finishing a plate piled high with roasted vegetables and savory meat. It could have come out of her mother’s kitchen and made her a little homesick despite her recent visit. She muttered to herself, “Focus, Scarlett. You have important things to do.”

Chief among them was to visit Lin for the discussion the other woman had promised, but only slightly less important was the need to find somewhere to store her stuff and lay her head. The lodge was out. She couldn’t go back there for an assortment of reasons. Moab had other motels that catered to tourists, but none of them had appealed, either. Scarlett decided she’d focus on the single step ahead of her.

“Time to go see Lin, buddy.”

Runeclaw opened his eyes, stood, stretched, and blinked at her. “The life of a guardian is a busy one.”

She chuckled. “Says the cat who’s been asleep for the last forty minutes.”

“One rests when one can. The future is unpredictable.”

“You sound silly when you try to be wise, you know that, right?”

He gave her an arch look. “Careful. Claw marks won’t make you any better looking.”

She raised her palms in surrender. “You win. Let’s go.”

After a short ride that included a stop to refuel Dusk Runner, Scarlett navigated through the throng of Wheels tavern. Its rowdy atmosphere was a stark contrast to the serenity of the restaurant, like stepping from a warm, cozy house into a raging storm.

Runeclaw clung to her shoulder as she moved through the crowd and flicked his tail in annoyance at the occasional bump from a patron not watching where they were going.
